Transstroy's history goes back to when the Ministry of Transport Construction of USSR (Mintransstroy) was established in 1954. Transstroy Corporation became its successor.
Enumerating Mintransstroy's construction projects gives a clear image of Russia's development benchmarks in the second half of ХХ century. They are seen everywhere – from tundra to sandy deserts, from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean.
As such, there are railroads constructed in severe climatic and natural conditions with the following routes: Abakan – Taishet, Taishet – Lena, Tyumen – Tobolsk – Surgut – Korotchaevo, Guryev – Astrakhan, Makat – Aktau, Beyney – Kungrad.
These include 3100-kilometer Baikal-Amur Mainline, which allowed to start developing a major territory with rich raw and materials reserves. It's Volga-Baltic Route, drastically changing navigating conditions throughout single deepwater system of European part of Russia. Bridge crossings for vehicles and trains, as well as combined ones over great rivers with complicated hydrologic and icy conditions: Volga, Don, Northern Dvina, Neva, Ob, Irtysh, Yenisei, Lena, Amur, Dnieper. Tunnels at the following routes: Abakan – Taishet, Novokuznetzk – Abakan, tunnels within Baikal-Amur Mainline and at routes in Caucasus. For years of its operational activity (1954-1991) Mintransstroy has been constantly increasing volumes of construction. There were implemented 53 thousand kilometers of new railway lines and side tracks. 46 thousand kilometers of railroads were electrified. 600 kilometers of metro were implemented. Over 200 kilometers of sea and river berths were constructed. 55 thousand kilometers of highways with hard surface were constructed. Over 2 thousand bridges, flyovers, overpasses constructed. Dozens of industrial and public buildings constructed, billions of residential square meters commissioned.
Large number of transport facilities has been constructed and reconstructed abroad. This includes 2000 kilometers of railroads in Syria, Iran, Guinea. 800-kilometer trunk railroad Havana – Santiago de Cuba. 1500 kilometers of highways in Afghanistan. Large bridge crossings over Yangtze River in China and red reiver in Vietnam. Bridges at ring road around Ankara in Turkey. Sea port in Yemen. Ship canal Keitele – Paijanne in Finland. Risking their lives Mintransstroy employees did there best to restore transport lines damaged due to natural disaster, technogenic accidents and other emergency cases such as those occured at Sakhalin island, Volga River, in Armenia, Bashkiria, Sverdlovsk, Arzamas, at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
By the time when Russia made a change-over to market-oriented economy, Mintransstroy had grown into a powerful, well settled structure uniting companies with different specialization, having good business relations, top notch equipment and highly skilled personnel. The ministry was governed by remarkable highly educated statists, able to set and implement large-scale economic tasks: E. Kozhevnikov, I. Sosnov, V. Brezhnev. Construction trusts assured commissioning of new facilities on time. A complex program “Word class transport construction” was being successfully implemented. Personnel working in severe conditions of uninhabited territories were encouraged to develop proactive and non-standard thinking. In fact, there has been established a conveyor for transport facilities construction.

Reorganization of state management system in 1991 caused winding up of many ministries, including Transport Construction Ministry (Mintransstroy). But the economic functions of the ministry, its specialization and production setup, as well as the process synergy appeared to be demanded in the new conditions. These are the things that played a major role in foundation of state-run Transstroy Corporation on the basis of Transport Construction Ministry in 1991. Later on, in 1992, Transstroy Corporation changed its legal form and was reorganized into Transstroy Corporation JSC.
Company's main task was construction of transport, civil and industrial facilities in Moscow region, near and far abroad.
By means of growing and upgrading its potential, the Corporation quite quickly turned into a major self-sufficient body with scientific, design, industrial and construction capacities. The authority the corporation obtained helped to save from dissociation many Russian high skilled work teams which earlier were assigned to the ministry, helped to preserve industrial potential of transport construction, process and economic relations within the industry branch. A number of construction and design units of the former ministry became reliable team-mates and daughter companies of Transstroy. This is how Transstroy conglomerate companies were formed, being united by mutual core activities - creation of transport and infrastructure facilities. When implementing its projects, Trannstroy always would rely on own productive force, contractor team, and daughter companies.
A holding called Transstroy Group was established in 2005, which included about 50 companies of the branch, among which are: Transstroy Corporation, Transstroy Engineering Corporation, Proekttransstroy (design and construction company), Tonnelny Otryad 44 (tunnel building company) and other construction and design companies. Facilities built by Transport Construction Ministry may be considered as a benchmark of this country's development in the second half of ХХ century, while Transstroy's facilities are the glorious continuation of Russian arterials development history. One of the first Transstroy's major construction projects in new competitive environment was reconstruction of Moscow Ring Road (1995-1998), a unique facility in Russian road construction practice.
A complex approach used during construction of this facility under compact city planning conditions later on was successfully used during construction of another most important Moscow highway - Third Transport Ring Road of Moscow. Among remarkable sites of the Third Transport Ring Road there are Kutuzov and Gagarin interchanges, Nizhegorodskaya flyover, deep-laid motorway tunnel under Lefortovo-nemetskaya sloboda historical reserve.
Among facilities built by Transstroy there are numerous transport structures at Moscow highways which include a unique interchange with Volokolamskoye highway, Svobody Street and tunnel under Moscow Canal. New aligning for superstructures of Andrrevsky and Krasnokoluzhsky bridges - monuments of architecture and engineering art. Construction of unhackneyed pedestrian bridge over Moscow River. Development of Russia's first Moscow monorail road, the most quiet and environmental friendly mean of passenger transport. Valuable experience gained during renovatoin of historical monuments. The most remarkable are: a wonder of Moscow architecture, Old Gostiny Dvor, Sklifosovsky institute of emergency medicine.
Scope of Transsstroy's projects is not limited by Moscow region. Besides Moscow and the vicinity, we work in other regions of Russia. In particular, there were built Kizlyar - Karlan-Yurt in railroad line in Dagestan, a line to Chineyskoye ore reserve in Chita region, first Russian private railroad to Srednetiman bauxite field in Komi republic. Transstroy Engineering Corporation CJSC managed construction of these lines.
Transstroy took an active part in development of port infrastructure in Russia's North-West Region. Transstroy Engineering Corporation CJSC managed construction of Baltic Sea facility complex: the first stage of coal terminal in Ust Luga, Primorsk bulk-oil terminal with hydrotechnic facilities complex and port infrastructure, light oils terminal in Primorks, a part of a large-scale North Stream project, and a system of approach lines to Distribution & Transshipment Complex Vysotsk. One of the recently implemented hydrotechiс projects in North-West region of Russia are C2 ship passage and the drawbridge at Saint Petersburg flood protection complex as well as Marine facade passenger port at Vasilyevsky Island in Northen Russian Capital.
The list of facilities erected by Transstroy in this region is not limited by hydraulic engineering facilities. These are Russian State Historichal Archive buildings, Pulkovo airfield; historical complex buildings in Strelnya were renovated in Saint Petersburg and the vicinity by Transstroy.
One of the most important Transstroy's business directions is the foreign economic activity. The portfolio of projects implemented abroad includes: construction of Keitele – Paijanne canal route in Finland; construction of 2 major bridges with high seismic safety in Turkey over Cubuk and Bayindir reservoirs, construction of Karatash viaduct at ring road around Ankara; designing and construction of Yuras railway park in Lithuania, on the territory of Ventspils sea port; dredging of approach channel and Tartus port aquatic area in Syria, reconstruction of 50-kilometer section of Almaty - Bishkek road in Kazakhstan, rehabilitation of Kyiv - Odessa road section in Ukraine. Currently, the Corporation is building a highway around Hyderabad, India.
During construction of various transport facilities Transstroy group reorganized its subcontracted services by type and regional representation. In particular, Transstroy Corporation JSC manages projects in Moscow region, Tonnelny Otryad 44 Ltd (tunnel building company) in Sochi, while both companies are specialized in construction of roads, bridges and tunnels, belonging to industrial and civil construction. Transstroy Engineering Corporation CJSC manages projects all over Russia and is specialized in airfield, hydrotechiс construction, railroad construction, as well as construction of buildings and facilities.
Nowadays Transstroy Companies work on many large-scale infrastructure facilities in various regions of Russia and abroad gaining new experience, implementing new project management approaches, applying top notch technologies, developing new engineering solutions, preserving traditions and principles of work established in Transport Construction Ministry.
